Bernard started in journalism as a radio reporter at BBC Scotland in the late eighties before joining STV as a Reporter/Presenter in 1990.

He was made the station’s Political Editor in 2000. He has been the main anchor at all election, referendum, by-election and election results programmes in the last two decades as well as presenting a number of current affairs programmes. He has reported on seven UK General Elections and five Scottish Parliamentary votes and has interviewed 4 Prime Ministers and all of Scotland’s First Ministers. He appears nightly on STV News at 6. Bernard was awarded the Royal Television Society (Scotland) Television Journalist of the Year for 2015 and 2016.
